The best part of baking your own bread is the freedom for creativity. And boy, does that creativity come alive in the kitchen! Goodbye to the limitation of whole wheat bread purchased in the grocery store; I let my creativity take control and bake breads of all different flavors and styles.

This Homemade Rosemary & Basil Vegan Focaccia Bread is an absolute favorite!  Amazingly, the recipe is ridiculously easy. The fact that the recipe ends up being vegan is just an added bonus!

Taste buds, prepare to salivate.

Homemade Rosemary & Basil {Vegan} Focaccia Bread
Yields 1 loaf
Recipe adapted from Fig + Fauna
(Recommended by Tammy from Our Neck of the Woods)

– 2 2/3 cups bread flour
– 1 envelope yeast
– 1 1/2 tsp. sea salt (more to sprinkle on top)
– 1 Tbsp. maple syrup
– 1 1/4 cups warm water (warm to the touch)
– 3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
– 1 Tbsp. dried rosemary
– 1 Tbsp. dried basil

1. Combine flour, yeast, and salt in bowl. Gradually stir in water, 2 Tbsp. olive oil, and maple syrup until dough forms.
2. Turn dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Sprinkle herbs into the dough, knead until soft and herbs are distributed throughout. Roll dough into ball and put in an oiled bowl. Let rise 1 hour.
3. Turn dough on lightly floured surface and knead lightly; let dough stand for five minutes. Roll dough out until roughly 1 inch thick. Put on greased baking sheet.
4. Poke indentations over the top of loaf, and spread remaining 1 Tbsp. of olive oil on top of loaf. Sprinkle sea salt all over.
5. Bake at 450 degrees for 15-20 minutes. The loaf is done when it’s golden, or it sounds hollow when you tap the top!

  1. I love homemade bread. This looks amazing. The only problem being that I end up eating way too much of it. So does everyone else. 😉 x

  2. I have a similar recipe for rosemary focaccia but I will try it with your secret ingredient of maple syrup! The secret ingredient in my recipe is a little finely diced onion, it lends a subtle flavor~ It’s rainy today, perfect for bread baking!

    • Jenna, the maple syrup adds just a bit of flavor and makes the dough sticky. I love it, and have seen people also use honey, agave, or other thick sweeteners. Finely diced onion sounds so, so good for this bread. I’m going to have to add that in next time I make it!

  3. Oh my goodness, this sounds fabulous! I LOVE homemade bread! 🙂

  4. from the look of the texture of that bread, i can see it is something i would love. i love rosemary and i love basil and i love bread, so this seems to be a killer combo.. that bread looks really tempting.. i can see me having it fresh from the oven with some garlic butter or accompanied with a cheese platter.
